There is a lot of incomplete and/or superficial information out there about spells.
I'll save the whole discussion about if they work and how for another time. What brought this musing on was that I received an email from a person complaining that she had been doing a spell for a specific outcome (job/ money) for several months with no effect. She was VERY specific about type of job, location of job, how much it payed, hours, how close to public transportation, etc. because she had read that it is important to know precisely what you want and ask for it.
This is true. If you are too vague with a spell than you might get a random outcome that you do not want or nothing at all because it has nothing to aim at. It is critical to a spell's success that you are very precise about exactly what you desire. However.... what you actually desire and what you THINK you desire are often two different things. What you "think" is always limited by your own imagination, past experiences, infatuations and such. So you "think" you want a very specific type of job ($45K a year, full time day hours, near the T, in office) or a particular type of person (tall, thin, brunette, intelligent, interest in video games, Pagan, a little kinky, with a good job and wants kids). But what you may "actually" desire is more likely a feeling of financial security in a job you enjoy or a healthy, happy, fulfilling relationship. Notice - your actual desires are almost always "qualities of life" rather than "details".
If you focus on the details - that limits the Divine too much. The Universe may have the perfect way for you to be financially secure that you haven't thought of. If you are too specific, that may never happen. On the other hand, would you be okay winning the lottery? Or getting a job that isn't near the T but lets you work from home? That pays more than $45K? Or for your healthy relationship, what if the relationship is perfect except she's only Pagan-friendly but really born Jewish? Doesn't have a good job because she's independently wealthy? Blonde? Short but built like a supermodel? Can you live with those as long as the relationships is emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and sexually healthy and fulfilling?
The "details" are easy to come up with because they require almost no imagination. To come up with the precise "qualities" that you seek - what you truly desire - that is harder. It requires that you honestly get to know yourself beyond the delusions (both good and bad) about yourself. That is scary, challenging and no fun whatsoever. But in many ways, that IS the magick..... and once you've done that work you'll find that you may not even need your spell. And if you do, the results will be almost instantaneous.
